A loose or damaged fuel cap or a fuel-rich engine will also produce a strong fuel smell. All these issues will also reduce vehicle performance. Two possible sources of this noise are a broken exhaust hanger or a severely damaged catalytic converter. The exhaust system is held in position by hangers. In time, rust or other damage can cause a hanger to break. This allows the affected exhaust section to move slightly, and it will bang against the underside of your vehicle until we replace the hanger. The catalytic converter changes dangerous engine gases into harmless ones using intense heat, crushing pressure, and chemical reactions. A worn converter can overheat, and excessive temperatures can cause the honeycomb interior to crack. Cracks will spread, and parts of the honeycomb will break off and rattle inside the converter.
